Thanksgiving is a time for family, food and friendship…and not a time anyone wants to think about dieting! Here are 4 tips on how you can enjoy your holiday without the guilt!
1. Don’t go hungry. It seems counter-intuitive to eat before your thanksgiving feast but you should! Often times we skip breakfast so we can “save more calories for later.” The result is excessive hunger and over-indulgence at the dinner table. I recommend a high protein shake 20-30 minutes before the meal. Protein signals “fullness” to the brain and it takes about that long for the signals to travel from the gut to the brain. When you are not starving, you are better able to make the right food choices.
2. Fill half your plate with green. Want your roast beef or turkey? No problem! Want to have a side of yams-that’s OK too! But save room so that half the plate is green. Before you go back for seconds, make sure you have downed all those veggies. The result? Less space in your stomach for the not-as-good stuff!
3. Stay a little hungry. Have you noticed when you get up from a meal you are often “too full?” Try getting up from the table while you are still a bit hungry. Chances are that if you wait the 20-30 minutes it takes for your gut to send signals to your brain, you will find that, Viola, you are full!
4. Drink up! Once you have finished your meal, pour yourself a hot drink. A warm beverage like hot tea will take time to consume, will help with digestion, and will make you feel full faster making you less likely to overeat.
In the end, remember that this is the holiday season. A time for festivities and enjoyment. So be kind to yourself and don’t sweat a couple extra pounds.
