Not all protein powders are created equal!
Protein is essential to building and repairing muscle and other tissues and comes from a Greek word meaning ‘first priority’.
Protein intake is important in providing the building blocks for muscle. Protein intake becomes especially important during weight loss because it helps preserve muscle mass (and therefore metabolism) and provides signals to the brain that help control hunger hormones. Studies show that consuming 30 grams of protein per meal is best.
Both animal and plant-based proteins can be consumed through food, however many of us do not have a balanced enough diet to acquire all the daily protein our body needs. Supplementing our diet with other forms of protein, such as protein powders, is a convenient and simple way to increase protein consumption and build lean muscle without the added fat and calories that can accompany a meal vs. a supplement. The more muscle mass you have, the more quickly you’ll burn off those unwanted calories and fat.
Supplemental protein can come as whey or plant based among other sources, all of which can help increase your total protein intake. While each form of protein can have its own benefits, studies show that whey protein is superior for weight loss and muscle building. This is likely because of the amino acid profile and the fast absorption rate of whey protein.
Whey protein can be made into a shake or smoothie and can be used in a variety of recipes, making it a nutritious, filling, and healthy way to get your protein at home or on the go. Remember to consume your protein throughout the day to get the most benefit.
Not all protein powders are created equal! If you are looking to increase muscle only, and not overall weight, choose a protein powder that contains at least 15 grams of protein per serving and less than 100 calories per serving. Read closely, as some protein powders are “mass gainers” and contain large quantities of fat and calories as well.
