“Disability is not a bad word.”
This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Scott, a five-time Paralympian, 3x medalist and wheelchair basketball champion on his journey of triumph and disability. Before we started recording, I asked Matt how he would like me to refer to his community. To which he answered, “People with disability,” that’s it, “Disability is not a bad word.”
What a teaching moment!
How often do we inadvertently limit our potential through the lens with which we view our identity? Matt says he never felt his disability was an impediment, an obstacle or hurdle. In fact, this was his gift, and that mindset led to his tremendous success as an athlete and in his personal and professional life and has fueled his passion to break down societal perceptions of disability.
Matt’s insights are relevant not only to the community he serves, but to all of us. In this soulful conversation, Matt and I discuss the transformative power of sport, strategies for overcoming barriers and embracing opportunities, and the importance of routine, support systems, and self-advocacy in personal growth.
This conversation will inspire you to:
- Embrace your unique journey and redefine your potential
- Foster inclusivity as a way to build community
- Recognize the value of resilience and adaptability regardless of your goals
- Challenge your notion of limitations and the self-limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviors that get in our way.
I think Matt even invited me to have dinner with him and his mom
This episode was just what I needed this week, maybe its what you need too! You can hear the whole episode here.
Wishing you a happy and healthy week, mind and body!
