A Feast for the Senses: The Psychological Art of Eating Well with Jared Gleaton

We all know that there is an emotional or psychological aspect to our consumption. Whether that is the consumption of social media, substances and of course of food. As I frequently say, our relationship with food is a mirror into how we relate in other ways in our lives, be it our work, with people, and how we show up in the world.

Which is why I loved hearing Jared’s perspective on all of this on this week’s episode of HealthBite.

Jared Gleaton, is a psychologist, food critic, and author, who talks about the intersection of food and psychology. He shares his inspiring journey of overcoming emotional eating and weight loss through his mindful practice of eating with our senses.

Jared’s story goes beyond just shedding pounds; it’s a powerful reminder that food is a reflection of who we are. Our emotions, experiences, and beliefs all play a role in how we approach our meals. And as a food critic, he takes this perspective into meals and restaurants all across the United States.

Jared also shares some specific insights into how he managed his over- consumption. As he puts it, they are simple but that does not make them easy. More importantly when done (even imperfectly) they are effective not only in elevating our enjoyment of food but elevating our enjoyment of life. Some of the pearls Jared shared include:

👉 Savor the Experience: Slow down and truly enjoy the flavors and textures of your food.

👉 Ditch the Distractions: Avoid eating while watching TV, working on your computer, or driving.

👉 Listen to your body: Pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues.

👉 Be kind to yourself: No one is perfect, nor do they need to be.

👉 Find your support squad: Connect with people who understand and encourage you.

By understanding the psychology of food and practicing mindful eating, you can cultivate a healthier and more fulfilling relationship with food and in other important relationships in your life.

Remember, whatever your intentions, progress, not perfection, is the goal! Take small steps, celebrate your victories, and be kind to yourself along the way.

Wishing you a happy and healthy week!
